one, you need to zoom in closer because i can see the edges that you cut the pic out with, and work on you battle scars, they need to be more as though the "spikes" are coming from a central point

see how my bullet scars are from the center, and there is an actual circle in the mark, also make sure you use Overlay for the mode in your brush tool

I can't really find a color that fits the picture but stands out enough, suggestions?

if you wanted, you could outline the words in Black, and then they would stand out
